How many times have I heard that argument?
It is a TERRIBLE argument.
Forget the fact that the theist owns the burden of proof and the atheist isn’t required to disprove claims
Forget the fact there is no evidence to support the existence of gods and therefore, by definition, it is irrational to believe gods exist.
I’m going to stick with JUST that argument.
IF we accept this argument as valid, imagine how it would change the world?
IF that argument is valid, imagine how it would change the court system?
If we adopt this silly position, this is what would happen:
YOU are charged with a crime you did NOT commit
Both sides present their case.
The jury deliberates and they are forced to render this verdict:
“Since the evidence wasn’t conclusive either way, the defendant must be GUILTY AS CHARGED!!”
Is this really how you expect us to live or are you just using the special pleading logical fallacy by saying, this only applies to YOU and YOUR beliefs about gods?
Either way, you better not get what you wish for. You can see how illogical and punishing that viewpoint really is.
THE ONLY TIME TO BELIEVE A CLAIM IS ON SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES.
So, what are your thoughts?
