2020 Democratic presidential long-shot Marianne Williamson came to fellow contender Tulsi Gabbard’s defense after the party’s former nominee insinuated that she is a “Russian asset.”
During a podcast interview on Thursday, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the Kremlin is “grooming” Gabbard to be a third-party spoiler candidate in the upcoming election without mentioning the Hawaii Democrat and veteran by name.
Late Friday night, Williamson responded to the allegation by slamming Clinton’s remarks with a warning to the Democratic establishment.
“The Democratic establishment has got to stop smearing women it finds inconvenient!” she tweeted. “The character assassination of women who don’t toe the party line will backfire. Stay strong @TulsiGabbard . You deserve respect and you have mine.”
Andrew Yang, another Democrat vying for the 2020 nomination, also defended Gabbard, saying the major in the Hawaii Army National Guard deserves “much more respect.”
Gabbard fired her own shots back at Clinton on Friday, calling the former first lady “the queen of warmongers, embodiment of corruption, and personification of the rot that has sickened the Democratic Party for so long.” She later appeared on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight and blasted Clinton’s comments as a message to “every veteran in this country, every service member, every American, anyone watching at home fighting for peace” that “you are also a traitor to this country.”
