I have brought about this discussion owing to comments made during another discussion, by a commentator refused to believe myself or the genuine citation I cited.
I come now to the Pious frauds committed for one reason only, that to deceive, in this case, promulgated by Christian Church from its antiquity.
Concerning the books of the New Testament (NT came together in 367 CE) from the earliest times, we see the original scriptures being defiled and rewritten by the early church. This is a known historical fact and I will elaborate on the non-scriptorial, Trinity and Resurrection, the Johannine Comma forgeries. With a paragraph of how the church dupes probably the greatest scholar of his day, Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus (1466-1536) commonly known as Erasmus.
Great historians and the not so great, from early Christianity all tell of pious forgeries committed against the Gospels and scriptures as a whole. The liar Eusebius of Caesarea tells posterity of the early frauds, Eusebius wrote: …Those who first advanced the Heresy of Artemon; their Manner of Life, and how they dared to corrupt the Sacred Scriptures…And he goes on to say: “For they say that all the early teachers and the apostles received and taught what they now declare, and that the truth of the Gospel was preserved until the times of Victor (189-98), who was the thirteenth bishop of Rome from Peter, but that from his successor, Zephyrinus (198/9-217), the truth had been corrupted...” Eusebius of Caesarea Church History, Bk. V, ch. 28. The brackets ( ) are mine.
The work of Josephus which is still is a bone of contention between scholars and the church even today, where past and present historians agree that Josephus’ Testimonium Flavianum (TF) was a Christian interpolation inserted into Josephus writing. And it is the very Christian church who is claiming the work as authentic. Justin Martyr, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian and Origen, never cited this passage in the TF in their controversies, although they were well acquainted with the writings of Josephus, and could not have overlooked such a favourable testimony to Jesus. Origen, indeed, distinctly says that Josephus “did not believe Jesus to be the Christ.” Contra Celsum 1:47
Although Jesus, according to Jerome, was unable to write, the early Christians manufactured for him a letter to Abgarus, Prince of Edessa. Eusebius professes to have translated the epistle or had it translated, from the archives of that city. Jortin says that “there is no room to suspect him of forging it, but there is an abundant reason to account it a forgery, and a foolish one too.” Many have received and defended it, from Ephrem Syrus down to Cave. Addison was perhaps the last eminent writer who accepted it. Since Lardner’s refutation of its claims to authenticity, it has been universally and quietly abandoned. Whether or not Eusebius forged the correspondence between Christ and Abgarus, we know on other grounds that he was not incapable of such a feat. http://www.ftarchives.net/foote/crimes/contents.htm#contents Ch. IV pious Forgeries footnote [70.5]
The early Christians manufactured a letter to Jesus from Abgar, Prince of Edessa. An epistle from Abgar pertaining to Jesus’ curing people without the need for cures, such as herbs and drugs, etc. As well as curing the blind, cleansing the lepers, and expelling demons, etc. Agbar is said to be terminally ill and writes to Jesus requesting that he visit Edessa and heal him. http://dro.dur.ac.uk/16983/1/16983.pdf
Jesus epistle to Agbar is just as blatant a forgery in the same form as Agbar V’s epistle.
Jesus is very happy that Agbar has heard of him and believes in his many good deeds, and says that when he is taken up he will send one of his disciples to cure him, etc., etc.
The Trinity and the Resurrection forgeries.
The famous Trinitarian text in 1 John 5:7-8 aka Johannine Comma has been almost universally recognised as a forgery since the days of Porson;* and the public is now informed in the margin of our Revised Bible that the second half of the last chapter of Mark, from the ninth to the twentieth verses, does not exist in the oldest manuscripts, while some manuscripts give a different ending altogether.
http://www.bible-researcher.com/endmark.html *Richard Porson (1759–1808) was an English classical scholar.
As proof of my citation on the forged insertion into the forged Trinity verses I attach a snip-it information from the Bible Research Institute with the written words of the late great American biblical scholar Dr Bruce M. Metzger (1914-2007) pertaining to the verses in Greek, Latin and English translation, with the fabricated words printed in RED which covers the greater part of what is known as the Trinity verse. Erasmus and the TF (Textus Receptus) Mother source of the 1611 KJBible.
The great Dutch Renaissance Humanist, Erasmus (1466-1536) aka Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus is linked to the forgery of Johannine Comma, albeit by the deception of the Church. Erasmus had stated after the church hierarchy had tried to force him to insert the Trinitarian verses into his first and second edition Greek New Testament. Known as Novum Instrumentum omne (1516), the first modern and critical version of the Greek New Testament, part of what is now known as the Textus Receptus. Erasmus had argued that if the church could find an early Greek MS with the trinitarian verses he would insert it into his third edition. However, Erasmus was duped by a church fake of a Greek manuscript (MS) purportedly containing an ancient copy of 1 John 5:7-8, which had been forged in Oxford c. 1520 by a Franciscan friar by the name of Froy (or Roy).
The Big Book of Bible Difficulties tells us:
“This verse has virtually no support among the early Greek manuscripts . . . Its appearance in late Greek manuscripts is based on the fact that Erasmus was placed under ecclesiastical pressure to include it in his Greek NT of 1522, having omitted it in his two earlier editions of 1516 and 1519 because he could not find any Greek manuscripts which contained it” (Norman Geisler and Thomas Howe, 2008, pp. 540-541). Almost every one of these scholars from the past and present that attest to the forgeries, controversies and contradictions within the Bible, and never lost the belief in Jesus, they still retained their Christian identity. So apparently telling the truth does not make you an Atheist or a sceptic, it makes you a better person!
These cited frauds are just a few from a wealth of church deception, the rest as Calvin would have said: “would form a whole ship’s cargo.” However, as a researcher, the forgeries within the NT are textual treasures nonetheless.
What do you think about these forgeries within the New Testament?
