President Trump at his rally Tuesday night declared that he would resist efforts by “some people” to change the name of Thanksgiving, sparking surprise from self-described liberals who said they were unaware of any such movement.
Speaking to 20,000 supporters in Sunrise, Fla., Trump compared the supposed campaign to rename the holiday with some Americans’ apparent fondness for arguing about whether people should greet each other with “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” each December. But no one needed to worry, Trump said as the crowd roared, because he had made everyone start saying “Merry Christmas” again.
“But now we’re going to have to do a little work on Thanksgiving,” Trump said. “People have different ideas why it shouldn’t be called ‘Thanksgiving,’ but everybody in this room I know loves the name ‘Thanksgiving,’ and we’re not changing it.”
