HOUSTON — Lightning is dangerous, but it also helps plants and grass grow.

The air we breathe is almost all nitrogen, like 78 percent. When lightning strikes, it releases that nitrogen in a form that can be carried to the ground by raindrops.

Plants get a drink of water and exactly the food they need, allowing them to continue growing.
