DELTONA, Fla. (CBS12) — The Christmas holiday had a tragic start for a family in central Florida.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said deputies had to shoot and kill a man who shot his sister right in front of them.

The incident began as a domestic dispute on Christmas Eve.

The sheriff’s office said the 73-year-old shooting victim called 911 to say her younger brother was being irrational and verbally abusive. The man also had a gun and some sort of mental illness authorities said.

When deputies arrived, the suspect refused to talk with authorities or let his sister out of the house. Eventually a third party made contact with the woman and told her to leave the house and turn toward where deputies were waiting for her, the sheriff’s office said.

As she walked out of the house, the sheriff’s office said the suspect rushed out and shot her in the shoulder. The bullet ricocheted and struck her in the face.

At that moment, deputies opened fire on the suspect, killing him. He’s been identified as 65-year-old Harvey Cantrell.
