A Deltona man’s hand was blown off by a firecracker that he lit while riding in a pickup over the weekend, Volusia County deputies said.

The explosion Saturday morning from the starburst cluster firework also shattered the front windshield, the rear glass and side windows of the Dodge pickup, investigating deputies said.

Deputies were called to the 2000 block of Newmark Drive around 1:20 a.m. Saturday after a loud explosion was heard.

A caller to 9-1-1 reported the explosion but refused to answer questions. Another caller reported hearing a blast and seeing a vehicle in the road. The caller also said people were running around and screaming, sounding the horn of the vehicle, deputies said.

“I don’t know what just happened. There was big huge boom and there is a truck over here, someone’s yelling they need a tourniquet,” the caller said. “I don’t know if a gun went off in their car, there is glass all over the road.”

“I see a truck with two people running around it, I don’t know what’s going on,” the caller told a dispatcher.
