A father and his fiancée in Center Moriches have been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death of 8-year-old Thomas Valva.
During a news conference, Suffolk Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said the boy was kept in an unheated garage overnight, amid bitterly cold temperatures, before his death.
Officials say at the time of his death, the boy’s body temperature was 76 degrees. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide with a contributing factor of hypothermia.
Suffolk police arrested the boy’s father, NYPD transit officer Michael Valva, 40, and his fiancée Angela Polina, 42, in connection to his death.
Police say a total of six children lived in the home at the time of the incident. Five children have since been removed to a safe environment.
Shortly after the death of his son, Michael Valva started a GoFundMe page for his son’s funeral. The page raised more than $16,000.
FYI–the boy’s mother lost custody because of his connection with the NYPD, and continuously filed complaints to multiple authorities about the abuse her children were suffering.
