Were humans created in the likeness of God?

Speaking generally there are two ways of looking at the origin of humans (homo sapiens):

A god of some sort, in western culture usually Yahweh, created mankind in his image.

Genesis 2:7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being..,.  21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib.

Mankind evolved by genetic mutation, natural selection and perhaps a few accidents in the same way as all other life forms.

Scientists have discovered a wealth of evidence concerning human evolution, and this evidence comes in many forms. Thousands of human fossils enable researchers and students to study the changes that occurred in brain and body size, locomotion, diet, and other aspects regarding the way of life of early human species over the past 6 million years. So here on one hand we have a holy text, the Bible telling us that man was created by God, and on the other hand we have the Smithsonian describing how humans have evolved naturally in the same manner as other life forms.

Were humans created by God or have they evolved in the same manner as all other life forms?
