Deerfield Park District Board Addresses Renaming Mitchell Park

The District will form a representative Citizens Advisory Committee tasked with recommending a new name for Mitchell Park.

At the June 18, 2020, Deerfield Park District Regular Board Meeting, in response to the agenda item number seven under New Business, the Mitchell Park Renaming Discussion, the Deerfield Park District Board of Commissioners approved the motion listed below:

Motion to change the name of Mitchell Park

The District will form a representative Citizens Advisory Committee tasked with the following:

  • To recommend a new name for Mitchell Park
  • To propose other ways to honor James Mitchell
  • To develop educational proposals to accurately teach the history of this period in collaboration with the Deerfield Historical Society, Deerfield Public Library, Village of Deerfield, West Deerfield Township, School District #109, High School District #113, representation from District #113 Social Studies Department, Gail Gand, Graham Ambrose and Residents from the Community at Large.

This Citizens Advisory Committee is charged with reporting back to the Park Board by the September 17, 2020, Park Board Meeting.

The Park Board is currently choosing a date for a Special Meeting of the Board of Commissioners to focus on the development of the committee.
