A poll by the Associated Press and NORC, along with the University of Chicago Divinity School shows that roughly two thirds of American believers think that God is sending a message that we need to change our ways. They don’t explain why God has to kill off 644,000 people, many of whom don’t believe in him, to send this message.
The poll found that 31% of Americans who believe in God feel strongly that the virus is a sign of God telling humanity to change, with the same number feeling that somewhat. Evangelical Protestants are more likely than others to believe that strongly, at 43%, compared with 28% of Catholics and mainline Protestants.

Is it a sign that we are evil and must change our ways?
In what way are we evil and how should we change?
