Deut 23
15 Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto thee:
16 He shall dwell with thee, even among you, in that place which he shall choose in one of thy gates, where it liketh him best: thou shalt not oppress him
You tell me..how can the poor be handled? How do you care for those and end homelessness and end poverty and prevent them from selling themselves into prostitution or worse, child sacrifices which was very real then?
We are talking about debt that could be paid for. It came with tons of protection. It was equality. Rights and laws, God enforced. They only needed to run to the next town to absolve all debt and be free. But God’s intent was…teach them how to become business wise. Teach them a trade. Get them into covenant with Him, out of covenant with the devil. By choice. Then they’d leave after six years with a full grant basically…like they left Egypt with spoils. It was to set up a new life. The wife came after she served her six years with that grant too. The rich Hebrews were obligated to do that. The poor in Israel were decreasing so much they had to go beyond.
The idea that God was out making property slaves, chattel and antebellum type forced servitude…doesn’t fit the scripture and doesn’t add up. There was no oppression on the servant..the pressure was on the Hebrews! Obey My commands at equality or else. They simply had to walk away to be free and the Apostate Hebrew was at a huge loss financially and God recompensed. 70 years they spent in Babylon for delinquent land release. God kept tabs.
God HAS to buy the slave first…to set them free. That freedom is a choice. But there are many laws and protections, safeguards to safe keep the poor and strangers, those rich strangers and those in debt bondage. All.
We today have more slaves in debt bondage…more sex slaves…more homeless…more in poverty starving in third world nations and here even.
God’s plan and God’s systems work beautifully.
Penalize the apostate covenant partners and bring in more covenant partners from the Gentiles.
