Trump’s Beer Hall Putsch: Is He Channeling Hitler or Pere Ubu?

Adolf Hitler’s Beer Hall Putsch of 1923 was the quintessential failed coup. Armed Nazi thugs muscled their way into a beer hall where the State Commissioner was giving a speech. Hitler, who couldn’t make himself heard over the crowd noise, fired a shot into the ceiling and screamed:

“The national revolution has broken out! The hall is surrounded by six hundred men. Nobody is allowed to leave.”

Though he managed to give a speech, and took some hostages, the coup fell apart in 24 hours. Hitler wound up serving eight months in prison, during which he wrote Mein Kampf and dreamed of better coup plans. Ten years later, Hitler’s brain trust organized a false flag attack on the German Reichstag (the German equivalent to the US Capitol) and seized absolute power.
