What You Need To Know

    • The House of Representatives voted to create a select committee to probe the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol

    • The panel would be led by Democrats, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointing a chairperson and at least eight of the committee’s members

  • The final vote was 222-190, with just two Republicans, Reps. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill. and Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., voting with Democrats in favor of the measure
  • Pelosi moved to form the select committee after Senate Republicans blocked the creation of a separate independent and bipartisan panel that would have been evenly split between the parties

“We take an oath to support and defend America’s Constitution from all enemies – foreign and domestic,” Pelosi wrote on Twitter after the vote. “Republicans want to keep the truth hidden about what happened on #Jan6th. But we will seek the truth of what happened. It’s imperative.”

I voted for an investigation into January 6th,” Florida Rep. Val Demings wrote on Twitter. “I voted to stand with the 140 Capitol Police Officers who were beaten and maimed defending our democracy. I voted to defend our Constitution and every freedom we claim to treasure.”

Rep. Cheney voted to support the measure, saying that while she would have preferred an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the attack, “a select committee is now the only remaining option.”

Pelosi moved to form the select committee after Senate Republicans blocked the creation of a separate independent and bipartisan panel that would have been evenly split between the parties and modeled after a commission that investigated the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Republicans ready to move on from the insurrection — and Trump’s role in it — argued against that as well, claiming it would be duplicative and partisan.
