San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin is on track to be recalled. While Boudin and his allies paint the recall as a sinister Republican ploy, it is the city’s Asian Americans who are leading the charge to get rid of him.
A poll released Wednesday by the San Francisco Standard found that 67% of Asian American and Pacific Islander voters supported the recall of Boudin. That is significantly higher than the support for the recall from Hispanics (52%), white voters (51%), and black voters (34%). Overall, 57% of voters back the recall, compared to just 22% in opposition.
Boudin’s view that criminals are the real victims of crime has allowed repeat criminals in San Francisco to run rampant. Asian Americans have been among the hardest hit, with a 567% increase in reported hate crimes in 2021 compared to 2020. High-profile incidents include a 69-year-old man being brutally beaten with a baseball bat and an 84-year-old man who was attacked and killed while walking near his home.
