Two Guys in a Horse Suit: The GOP’s Empty Claims of Election Fraud

  • Texas Republicans passed voter restrictions based on Trump’s “Big Lie” and exaggerated tales of voter fraud that no longer hold up.
  • GOP politicians are trying to intimidate voters with lies, but it’s hard to be intimidated when you see past their farce.
  • It’s on all of us to help fellow Texans see past the GOP’s charade. We must reveal the “two guys in a horse suit.”
  • Attacks on our freedom to vote are serious. We can and must resist. We can also humiliate spineless politicians in the process.

Just how empty are the claims of rampant voter fraud Texas Republicans use to justify further restrictions on our freedom to vote? Consider the following:

  • The show pony of voter fraud the GOP used in 2020 and 2021 to argue for new restrictions on voting turned out to be little more than Attorney General Ken Paxton in the rear end of Donald Trump’s “Big Lie” horse costume.
  • Litigious right-wing agitator Steven Hotze, a plaintiff in 2020 legal efforts to block election reforms intended to make voting safer and easier during the pandemic, found himself a criminal defendant. Hotze was indicted for his role in a conspiratorial election fraud “investigation” that ended when an innocent plumber was held at gunpoint by Hotze’s henchman.
  • The all-Republican Texas Court of  Criminal Appeals said a lower appeals court erred when it upheld the conviction and widely criticized five-year sentence of Crystal Mason for innocently casting a provisional ballot while on federal supervisory release.
