Attorneys, lawmaker report death threats as migrants sue Florida governor

Attorneys representing dozens of migrants who were flown from Texas to the island of Martha’s Vineyard by the state of Florida say their clients are receiving “hate messages and death threats” as they pursue a lawsuit.

“Our clients continue to receive hate messages and death threats that are arriving at the office of Lawyers for Civil rights and Alianza Americas,” said Ivan Espinoza-Madrigal, executive director of Lawyers for Civil Rights.

State Rep. Dylan Fernandes — who represents Falmouth, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket and Gosnold — said his staff has also received death threats. He is one of several local leaders who has publicly called for a federal investigation into the incident.

“I don’t know when it became controversial in this country to treat human beings like human beings with the dignity and respect that everyone deserves,” Fernandes said. “But we’re going to continue to do that no matter how many threatening or obnoxious messages that we receive.”
