Hi
Was the burning down of St Mary Overie and the 1212 great fire of London an Act of God?
One would think that if there was a god, he/she would protect the holy scriptures and the churches that the congregations used to revere their jealous god with prayers and adoration. Well, throughout history there is documentation pertaining to the destruction of the scriptures, as well as the destruction of the so-called Houses of God! In ancient and modern times great cathedrals, minsters, abbeys, and churches have been destroyed by fire, earthquakes, and floods. And in times of war, bombs and incendiary devices have taken their toll on religious houses. With the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris being the most recent famous religious structure to burn down. But from the beginning, churches have been destroyed mainly by fire, yet the Christian god was nowhere to be seen. No monsoons or great winds to drench or blow out the fires, or the Hand of God saving religious buildings during quakes, have ever been documented. Yet, the only thing one can say is that all the destruction of these holy places was an “Act of God”.
Recent correspondence with Historic UK, pertaining to the Great Fire of London in 1212 CE, aka the Great Fire of Southwark, which prompted this discussion. Brought back a memory of my school days when I was perusing books and documents looking for the early Old/Middle English sobriquet words such as “slugabed, cattywampus, croak, and overie”.
The earliest account of the 1212 fire appears in the Liber de Antiquis Legibus (“Book on Ancient Laws”), written in 1274: “In this year was the Great Fire of Southwark, and it burned the church of St MaryOverie, as also the Bridge*, with the chapel there, and the great part of the city.” This destruction came with the loss of 3,000 souls from a cosmopolitan culture. Made-up of Anjouvians, Normans, Eastsexa, Suðsexa, Westsexana, and the Cantware. Including other West Germanic peoples that came into Britain between 449-1066. We know they were not a Nation as yet, as Robert Of Gloucester wrote between 1297-1300, that the: Þe englisse in þe norþhalf · þe saxons bi souþe. Translated into Modern English: The Angles in the north half, the Saxons be in the south.
*As London Bridge was built of stone, it survived the fire, but the damage was so great that for years afterwards it was only partly usable.
For those interested in sobriquets:
slugabed, refers to someone who stays in bed late.
cattywampus, describes something crooked or askew.
croak, means to watch someone silently as they eat, in the hope that you will be invited to join them.
And Overie, means “over the river.”
St Mary Overie was first a Christian establishment for a community of nuns in the 7th century, but the first written reference is the mention of a ‘minster’ in the Domesday Book of 1086.
It became a Priory in 1106 the church was ‘re-founded’ by two Norman knights, whose members lived according to the rule of St Augustine of Hippo (354– 430). We know Augustine of Hippo as the 4th and 5th-century version of today’s Donald Trump, a pathological liar of his time. As well as a racist anti-black prejudice bigot. Who documented that he saw in Ethiopia, headless men and one-eyed giants. Which probably changed the chivalrous knight into discourteous liars.
What do you say on part or all of the discussion?
