Just the other day I was walking along a path at a local park with my fifteen year old daughter when all of the sudden some man erupts from the bushes, grabs my her by the wrist and says, “It’s time for your pelvic exam, sweetie!” I drew a can of pepper spray and gave the creep a blast right in his crazy face.
My daughter, held up her hand. “Wait, dad! How do you know he isn’t a real gynecologist?”
“Well, I’m not perfect!” the would-be assailant sputtered.

If you showed up seeking treatment at an emergency room one of the first people you’d see would be a trauma or emergency practitioner. If your condition required a higher lever of care he may keep you overnight and refer you to a specialist like a cardiologist or a neurosurgeon, specialists requiring intensive and specific training. These people, like all doctors, have their competence as a matter of public record as well. This includes mortality rate, litigation, licensure and discipline by the State board of Medicine.
For the purposes of my argument, let’s compare the soul to a vital organ. How delicate and fragile it must be! It would require the most intricate and disciplined of hands because any damage done to it could be irreversible and fatal – especially if the practitioner were malevolent or incompetent. It’s something not to be left in the hands of a forklift driver or a landscaper.
There are a lot of “soul-specialists” lurking here in the BNR bushes, leaping out and demanding us to expose our innermost parts to them while expecting us to cower at their self-aggrandizement. “I have the Spirit of God!”, “I was bathed in the Blood!” They are nameless, faceless and the only thing we know about their identities are their avatars and their handles like “jesussaves” or something similarly pretentious. Nothing about their history or scholastic pursuits.
My questions for the BNR community:
Should we require Christians to have a license to practice? Before you perform an intervention on my soul, should you have qualifications? Training? A track record? Success/fail rate? How do I know if people who have sought your intervention are in hell or not? How do I know if YOU are bound for hell or not? If you’re going to say something like: “Jesus is the real soul doctor” then why do we need you?
