America’s Crisis of Single-Parent Families Has Only Gotten Worse

Currently, 88% of Asian kids live in married parent families; 77% of white kids; 62% of Hispanics and 38% of black children. For Whites, Blacks and Hispanics these are big drops from a decade or so ago. Overall, almost one in three children do not live in a two-parent home.

Kearney, compiled data showing that, on average, children with only one parent are less likely to succeed academically, go to college, and be economically successful.

Not surprisingly, she got pushback from some progressives who view this as a distraction from advocating for more assistance programs — and from some feminists who contend it undervalues the role of single mothers. Unlike Moynihan, Kearney says she didn’t get a lot of blow-back from Blacks…

But, as Kearney and others note, the data clearly show that kids living with two parents do much better than a child raised by a single parent, educationally and ultimately financially. I think that applies to a traditional man and wife, a couple together outside of marriage and a gay couple. (If any of these relationships really sour, it’s better to move on.)

America, Kearney notes, has the highest percentage of single parent families in the world.
