A Rhode Island priest who banned lawmakers from receiving communion due to their pro-choice stance defended the controversial move by arguing “pedophilia doesn’t kill anyone and this does.”
The Rev. Richard Bucci, a pastor at the Sacred Heart Church in West Warwick, released a letter last week naming 44 lawmakers who he said should not be allowed to receive communion after they voted in support of the Reproductive Privacy Act, according to CBS News.
He sparked further controversy with his defense of the move during a recent interview with Massachusetts news station WJAR.
“We are not talking about any other moral issue, where some may make it a comparison between pedophilia and abortion. Pedophilia doesn’t kill anyone and this does,” Bucci, 72, told the TV outlet.
The Reproductive Privacy Act was signed into law last May and serves as a protection of abortion rights in Rhode Island.
