Misgendering Sam Smith

[Note to eds. Probably for Perspectives. Thanks.]

Douglas Murray, a gay writer with whom I find myself in agreement more often than not these days, briefly discusses being hung out to dry by the gay press for “misgendering” the pop non-entity, Sam Smith. Agreeing with Murray makes me squirm a bit, and saying that it makes me squirm also makes me squirm, but in a different way. Perhaps with all the squirming this way and that, I’ve untwisted myself and am prepared to say this man makes absolute sense and I can now thoroughly recommend his two recent books, ‘The Strange Death of Europe’ and ‘The Madness of Crowds’. I can also recommend his book on the public inquiry into the Bloody Sunday Massacre by British Paratroopers in Derry, Northern Ireland. That incident having taken place on my own doorstep, I know quite a bit about it, and despite Murray’s reputation as something of an arch-conservative (such types aren’t known for their sympathy with anything to do with the Irish cause), I can’t fault his treatment of the case in the least.

Why should I squirm at finding myself in agreement with Murray? Well, look him up. He’s fairly controversial. He’s been pilloried by so-called liberals. He speaks about uncomfortable truths firmly, intelligently and unflinchingly. And well, uncomfortable truths do tend to make people squirm.

To mix a metaphor, an uncomfortable truth might be a thorn in one’s side, and plucking those out, as Murray does brilliantly, is a relief.

I’m holding out this short video in the hope that perhaps some of my American friends will look him up further, and see that staunch liberalism can sit perfectly comfortably with hard-nosed conservatism, and it’s in this line of thought that I see a way forward and a deliverance from bleating, mewling bleeding hearts who couldn’t think their way out of a wet paper bag, while also providing a robust rebuttal to blind, tub-thumping, jingoistic right-wing populism.

What say you?
