Birth control should be free.

Birth control should be free

The Center for Disease Control latest report shows that there were 12.5 abortions per 1,000 women, ages 15 to 44, in 2013, a 5 percent decrease from 2012 (13.2 per 1,000 women). Not coincidentally, the contraceptive mandate of the Affordable Care Act took effect in August 2012, meaning most health plans had to cover birth control without co-pays starting in January 2013.

While it is obvious that contraception reduces unwanted pregnancies the Catholic church and some other denominations are strongly opposed to its use. Wikipedia explains the Catholic view thus:

The Catechism of the Catholic Church specifies that all sex acts must be both unitive and procreative In addition to condemning use of artificial birth control as intrinsically evil, non-procreative sex acts such as mutual masturbation and anal sex are ruled out as ways to avoid pregnancy.

Given that contraception is proven to reduce unwanted pregnancies why is it that various religious bodies, who oppose abortion, also oppose the means of lowering the abortion rate?
