Can I change your mind?

Tomorrow will be a historically momentous day.

We will as a nation be defining leadership, our role in the world, our approach to governance, and our morals in interaction with one another.

This day will mean a lot to a lot of people, which is why I feel it is worth asking a question to the people who are currently thinking about or resolved to vote against what I value: “can I change your mind?”

I am not asking can I have you accept my values. I am not asking can you give up your values. I am not asking you to join me in any policy, specifically.

I am asking if there is a part of you that is open to listening to someone like me, who is passionate about why things must change, and that there is a chance that by discussing things we can come to an agreement? One that does not involve giving more power to a man who even you can admit does not deserve it, despite him using it sometimes to help you?

Because I honestly don’t see a good way forward if we do not do this. If the things I believe in lose on Tuesday, then there is no good way forward. If they win, there is no good way to move forward that leaves millions of people behind, angry, afraid or feeling unheard. We will simply repeat the cycle again and again.

So please, I am asking you, take this opportunity, tell me what it is that you need, ask questions you have about the values I believe in, and give me a chance to see if I can change your mind and we can move forward together. And in the process, see if you can change my mind and make sure the things you value get traction and understanding.
