The record of very-orthodox, scripture-inspired Christians on homosexuality is clear. It is a sin, and an abomination, and they will not tolerate in their communities… or on the broader community at that. Total ostracism is the best someone who is gay, and refuses to “change their ways” can expect.
You can point out that homosexuality isn’t identified as a big deal in the 10 commandments; homosexuality isn’t spoken to at all by Jesus, or mentioned in the gospels, nor is a punishment prescribed for it by Paul… it doesn’t matter. For a scripture-inspired Christian, it’s not possible to accommodate being gay, and being a Christian.
Adultery is mentioned in the 10 commandments though–it’s equivalent to murder. Adultery is also condemned explicitly by Jesus:
Matthew 5:27-30
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.
When social scientists have attempted to study the impact of pornography online on the young male brain, they’ve been unable to, because they can’t create a “control” population. As far as we can tell… every young man, with internet access, is exposing themselves to pornography. They are committing adultery.
Jesus instruction should this happen is clear: self mutilation! Cut off the hand with which you are masturbating so as to save yourself from damnation! Gouge out your eyes so you see no more!
And yet… where are all the self-amputee, self-blinded Christian men, hoping to save their souls from damnation?
How is it that the Christians that so rigourously and vociferously condemns homosexuality–on stronger terms than the text of scripture supports–do not care about all the men in their midst wantonly engaged in the much graver sin of Adultery?
