The Dallas Mavericks have not played the national anthem before home games this season and have no plans to do so moving forward. The decision was made by Mark Cuban, the owner confirmed to The Athletic on Monday evening.
Cuban declined to comment further, and the team declined to comment on Tuesday. A source close to Cuban told The Athletic the decision to not play the anthem before Mavericks games isn’t because they don’t love the U.S., but because many feel the anthem doesn’t represent them, and they want to continue discussion of how to represent people from all communities when honoring the U.S. at games.
Cuban said in July that he would kneel with players during the anthem. He also tweeted, “The National Anthem Police in this country are out of control. If you want to complain, complain to your boss and ask why they don’t play the National Anthem every day before you start work.”
