Joe Biden says ‘democracy is in peril’ as he attacks voter suppression laws in Memorial Day speech

R&I – FS

Joe Biden, the US President, said that “democracy is in peril” in America and urged people to seek “truth, founded on facts, not propaganda,” in a Memorial day speech at Arlington Cemetery.

The 78-year-old paid tribute to fallen soldiers and mentioned his son Beau, who served in Iraq and died of brain cancer six years ago.

In a thinly veiled attack on the laws being pushed in more than a dozen states which restrict voting rights, the president said: “Democracy itself is in peril, here at home and around the world.

“Democracy thrives when the infrastructure of democracy is strong. When people have the right to vote freely, fairly and conveniently.

“What we do now, how we honour the memory of the fallen, will determine whether democracy will long endure.”
