The primary point for discussion in this OP is to get your opinion, be you an atheist or a fantasist, on the question of whether accepting the modern theory of evolution by natural selection leads people away from the worship of a Bronze Age Hebrew wargod.
When Darwin first published his magnificent opus On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life in 1859, it caused a bit of a stir among the religious community. Quick side-note: the use of “races” here must be understood in the scientific sense it was meant at the time and does not speak to the delusional idea that there is more than one human race on the planet right now; side-side-note: not that it matters for much related to this OP but Darwin was about as anti-racist as a white Englishman from a rich family could be at the time… and both of his grandfathers were staunch abolitionists.
Most Christian influencers at the time railed against what they saw as a book that was beyond heretical; they feared, in fact, that the dissemination of the ideas within it would weaken people’s faith… and this is a view that is shared, today, by folk such as Ken Ham.
I think that they were right to be thus afraid… but it turns out that the thing they had to be afraid of was not Darwin’s book, but the very truth of reality itself… for it turns out that Darwin was, in the most part, right… all life on Earth shows signs of being related to all other life on Earth, and not just “related” but related in a very specific way: nested hierarchies (a fact that baffled Linnaeus). I haven’t, to date, heard a single Creationist argument that would go any distance at all to explain why God, if He created all life, would have done so in such a way as to make it look like no designer was necessary… or even an explanation from that worldview that would explain the nested hierarchies we observe. Sure, you can always just say “God did it” and then follow that up with “mysterious ways”… but then you’re kinda accepting a prankster God who went about burying dinosaur bones to trick people into not believing in Him… and that’s nuts (not that that seems to stop everybody from going there).
Now, it seems obvious to me from a cursory reading of Genesis 1 and 2 that whoever wrote those chapters was NOT in touch with knowledge about the order of “creation”… and so believing the modern theory of evolution necessitates that one cannot hold the view that the Bible is literally (even with a reasonable degree of leniency for poetic license) correct. Well, what of it? You cannot accept modern geology and believe in the Noah myth either, which (*) was evolved from an ancient tradition of flood stories going back a thousand years before the Hebrews plagiarized it… back through the Epic of Gilgamesh and Atra-hasis to Ziusudra.
Despite all this, though, YHWH worship didn’t just keel over and die; there are Christians today (most, in fact) who just roll with these punches… the Bible, they say, IS God’s Holy word, but it’s not to be taken literally… and evolution by natural selection is true… it’s just that that is how God chose to go about Creation.
And it is well that less people believe the bloody (and I use that word advisedly in both senses) Bible literally… for within its foul pages we learn that the creator of the universe did once lean into a hirsute Hebrew’s hairy ear inciting genocide, race-based slavery and the public torture to death of children by their own parents. We also, of course, hear the consistent message that humanity is filth… culminating in Lord Jesus coming down to warn everybody that they’re all deserving of infinite torture and that that’s what they’re going to get unless they adopt “faith” and choose to worship an infinite torturer as infinitely benevolent. I have yet not, on that topic, heard a single one of these “the Bible speaks in allegory, foolish atheist” folk justify what wisdom any of this crap is an allegorical description of…
Anyhooooooo…
Do you personally think that the acceptance of the modern Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection weakens YHWH worship worldwide?
*(as if anybody needed any more evidence that the notion of a 950 year old alcoholic building a wooden boat to float an example of every type of animal on Earth upon to preserve life on Earth from God’s great plan to decimate life on Earth was nuts)
