Investigative journalism: New York Times looks into whether it matters if you eat the stickers on produce

We keep hearing about how important it is to financially support newspapers through subscriptions so that intrepid journalists have the resources they need to break big stories like — does it matter if you eat the stickers on fruits and vegetables? The New York Times answered the question in the tweet, so there’s no need to click through as we did.


The Times reports:

Though the stickers are edible, they have no flavor and no nutritional value. And there is an environmental downside to not removing them before discarding skins, peels and other parts that you don’t eat: Produce stickers are not home compostable, so they won’t break down in the compost.

We hadn’t considered the environmental downside.
