Article 3, section 3, clause 1 of the U.S. Constitution specifies that the giving of aid and comfort to the enemy is an element in the crime of Treason. Is buying oil from Russia Treason? Russia uses its vast natural supplies of crude oil as a major export market and has grown in recent years. In spring 2021, imports of Russian oil to the United States are at their highest level in a decade. Russia became the second-largest exporter of oil to the U.S. later that year.
Across 2021 the U.S. imported between 12 million and 26 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum from Russia every month. In November 2021, the most recent figures on record, the Energy Information Agency reports that the U.S. took 17.8 million barrels. Russia exports more oil to the United States than Saudi Arabia does. The Biden administration continues to downplay the amount of oil we buy from Russia.
The President is sternly opposed to cutting off oil shipments from Russia. He would like to get NATO and the European Union to stop purchasing Russian energy then he would agree to stop buying it in America. If he decides to stop buying Russian energy Biden is concerned that the price of gas could go much higher. On Sunday, March 6, 2022 the pump price in southwest Florida was $3.99 for regular. Later that evening, I saw that the price of crude oil was up to as high as $130 per barrel.
If it holds at the $130 level, then the standard pricing formula for regular gas would call for an average price of $4.76 a gallon. This means that a car with a 16-gallon tank will spend $76.00 for a tank full of gas. Do you think many Democrats will get elected with people spending $76 or more to fill their tanks? In a previous commentary, I predicted a price of $150 a barrel by the mid-terms. That would mean $5.49 a gallon or $87.00 per fill-up. In some places in the country, prices may be much higher.
He can’t just stop buying from Russia unless he accelerates the development of our energy resources, driving us back to energy independence. If he finally does this, he will be saying President Trump was correct, and that will be a hard thing for the President and his fellow Democrats to swallow. The question is will he sacrifice himself and the American people on the New Green Deal Altar?
