Seattle councilmember says people are throwing poop in her yard, criticizes police action

SEATTLE (KOMO) — Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant has accused the Seattle Police Department of failing to fully investigate several incidents of people throwing human excrement in her yard.

There have been six incidents where Sawant and her family discovered human waste in their yard, the most recent occurred on Oct. 13, according to a statement from Socialist Alternative on behalf of Sawant, who is a member of the organization.

Sawant said after at least one of the incidents, their dogs got into one of the bags before they realized what had happened. They called the animal poison control hotline, not knowing what the material was, Sawant said. The councilmember said she believes there is a “very high likelihood that this extreme and hostile behavior is politically motivated, and could turn into more serious and dangerous harassment.”

Sawant claimed she was informed that five days after Seattle police opened the investigation on Oct. 13 the case is being “inactivated (and) no longer pursued at this time.” Sawant also claimed police did not follow up regarding a threatening email sent to her City Council office, which called her an expletive and said “you can sit on your throne of human excrement,” according to her statement.

The councilmember has also accused the police department of not treating these recent “repeated attacks” against her as seriously as when Black Lives Matter protesters rallied outside former Mayor Jenny Durkan’s home during the summer of 2020.
