Inflation seems to be the story of the season right now, with folks naturally wondering:
What caused it?
How will it affect us?
How can we stop it?
I have handled numerous requests for interviews over the past few months, even some from high school and college students struggling with these same questions. My response has been the same every time and I will lay it out below. Suffice it to say at the outset that inflation, like Johnny Depp’s relationship status, is complicated.
Before answering the three questions, we need to have a look at the component parts of the current inflationary episode. That should always be your first step, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics is the place to go for insight. The graphic below is a screenshot from their current inflation summary:
