Authorities are hunting for a suspect who reportedly shot 5 of his neighbors in Cleveland, Texas – including an 8-year-old boy – before fleeing.
Francisco Oropesa, 38, is a Mexican national who is living in the U.S. illegally. He has been detained and released by ICE multiple times, with the last encounter recorded in 2016. San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers and FBI Houston Special agent in charge James Smith announced an $80,000 reward for tips leading to Oropesa’s arrest (Caper’s office number is 936-653-4367).
These are photos of Oropesa that may help identify him:
“We do not know where he is, that’s why we’ve come up with this reward,” said Smith at a press conference. “We have zero leads.”
Authorities currently have a 20-mile perimeter set up, which they widened from 5 or 6 miles over the weekend, in an attempt to catch the fugitive before he leaves the area. Police found abandoned clothes in the area and tracking dogs “picked up a scent,” but they later lost it in a body of water.
“He could be anywhere now,” Capers said.
Biden’s DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who has been criticized by conservative lawmakers for a soft approach to border security, refused to comment on the case when asked by NBC’s Chuck Todd on Sunday.
“I won’t comment on it because it is an active case. The tragedy that occurred is… just absolutely horrific.”
