Good Samaritans stop kidnapping in Plymouth; One tackles man

Three good Samaritans helped save a woman who was allegedly being kidnapped by her estranged husband in Plymouth early Friday, according to police.

Jamie Costa, a lifelong Plymouth resident, as well as Jeffrey “Chili” Williams and David Williams, two brothers who were working in the area, are being credited by authorities with stopping the man, who law enforcement did not identify publicly, from kidnapping his estranged wife after showing up at her home around 9 a.m. Friday, the Plymouth Police Department said in a Facebook post.

The chaotic series of events of the morning started to unfold around 9 a.m., when police received multiple calls about a “man chasing a woman down the street with a gun,” according to the department’s police. Before the calls, the 39-year-old Plymouth man allegedly violated a restraining order by showing up at the home of his estranged wife.

Police said the man, clad in a face mask and handcuffs, tried to kidnap the woman by picking her up and grabbing her by the head and neck while she was holding one of their children. She was able to scream, which got the attention of Costa, who authorities noted is a former correctional officer. He then began yelling at the man to leave the woman alone “and lined him up for a good old fashioned football tackle,” the department detailed.

As Costa tackled the woman’s estranged husband, the man allegedly pulled what looked like a handgun from his waistband. Police noted two replica firearms and a stiletto knife were later taken from him.

Jeffrey and David Williams also heard the screams, saw what was going on and rushed to help. The department said one of the brothers, who is licensed to carry a firearm, pulled out his gun, while the other helped Costa as he tackled and disarmed the man.

The three good Samaritans held the struggling man until Plymouth police Officer Bobby Hackett arrived at the “hectic scene,” quickly figured out what happened and arrested the man, according to the department.

The man was charged with the violation of a restraining order, assault and battery on a family member, kidnapping, assault with a dangerous weapon and reckless endangerment of a child, police said.
