Study finds volunteer firefighters save New York taxpayers $4.7 billion a year

The Firefighters Association of the State of New York has released an economic impact study of the use of volunteer firemen and firewomen.

The FASNY report, prepared by Resolution Economics, says New York’s 80,000 volunteers save you $4.7 billion annually by eliminating the need to pay career firefighters wages, benefits and related costs.

NYS has 1,640 fire departments — FASNY says 93.2 percent of them are all-volunteer or mostly volunteer.
