If there’s one thing that binds us all as humans, it’s our intrinsic need for dignity, respect, and safety.
Yet every so often, an incident arises that not only shatters this universal ethos but also exposes the glaring double standards that exist in our society’s discourse on race.
The chilling video from Zelzate, a Flemish region in Belgium, provides a heartbreaking testament to these inconsistencies.
Consider, if you will, the horrific scenario in which a young boy is surrounded, humiliated, and beaten by a gang of youths.
Forcing him to kneel and kiss their feet, the perpetrators further proceed to assault him physically, all the while laughing at the distress they’re causing.
It’s a scene that would provoke fury and indignation regardless of the racial background of those involved.
However, the response would likely have been more explosive, more pervasive, had the races been reversed.
Now, to be very clear: Every act of bullying, regardless of the race of the victim or perpetrator, should be condemned in the strongest terms.
The heartbreak of the victim and the cruelty of the attackers are universal.
But we have to ask, is society uniformly enraged when such incidents occur?
