WASHINGTON (TND) — A college education is becoming less important for small business owners looking to hire employees as they prioritize skills and experience over educational achievements when sorting through candidates.
A survey involving 70,000 small businesses in the U.S. by recruiting company RedBalloon and payment service PublicSquare found that many of the respondents feel candidates are more qualified through working experience and colleges are not giving graduates the skills they need to enter the workforce.
“We would hire someone with hands-on experience over someone that read about it in a book,” one respondent said in the survey.
A majority of the respondents said they are not seeing a return on investment for graduates in terms of getting the skills they need when entering the workforce. Sixty-seven percent of respondents said “strongly no” when asked if schools were graduating students with relevant skills that today’s business community needs. Another 24.4% responded with “somewhat no” while only 8.7% responded either “somewhat yes,” “strongly yes,” or “other.”
