Face masks return to hospitals as ‘tripledemic’ cases of Covid, flu and RSV surge

Aconcerning surge in cases and hospitalizations related to the combined impact of Covid-19, seasonal flu, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has prompted hospitals across the United States to reimpose mask mandates for staff, patients, and visitors.

Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals a notable increase in respiratory virus cases, with flu admissions rising by a staggering 48 percent in the week ending December 23, compared to the previous seven-day period. This surge in flu cases is also up nearly 90 percent over the same time in 2019, before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Covid-19 hospitalizations also experienced a concerning uptick of 17 percent within a week. Meanwhile, RSV, which the CDC director had previously mentioned as having ‘peaked’ last month, is showing signs of resurgence.

The impact of these respiratory illnesses is particularly straining children’s hospitals in some states, with healthcare professionals describing this winter’s virus season as the “worst” they have witnessed.
