The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has recommended only six months in prison and a $500 fine for James Ray Epps who incited other January 6 protestors to enter the Capitol.
“The government recommends that this Court sentence Defendant James Ray Epps, Sr. to six months incarceration, which is the high end of the applicable Sentencing Guidelines range of zero to six months,” said the DOJ.
The sentence recommended by the DOJ is significantly less than the sentences issued for any other January 6 rioters, many of whom face multiple years in prison.
Another rioter, Henry Tarrio, faces 22 years in prison for his involvement in the January 6 incident, the longest sentence given to anyone involved.
The video embedded below shows Epps clearly instigating the riot and encouraging people to enter the capitol building.
…The DOJ claims that they offered Epps a plea deal because he turned himself in two days after the incident, complied with FBI investigations, and tried to “deescalate conflict” despite video showing Epps, on multiple occasions, telling other protestors to enter the capitol, which other protestors initially opposed.
