The border crisis is now owned by Trump and the Republicans. The next time you hear them complain about the Mexican border crisis, remember that Trump told them to vote against more border guards, immigration judges and other security measures. Cowardly Republicans in Congress decided that Trump’s demands were more important than border security.
Republicans are also putting Trump above our national security interests in Europe by refusing to approve funding for Ukraine to fight a two-year-old Russian invasion. Let’s be clear, this is a vote against democracy and our European allies. By not supporting Ukraine, Republicans are putting Russian interests above American interests.
Right on cue, former Fox host Tucker Carlson traveled to Russia to “interview” Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Carlson has said the U.S. had no interest in stopping Russia from “messing around” in Europe. How many people said that before World War II when Adolf Hitler was “messing around” in Europe?
There is nothing wrong with private citizen Carlson interviewing Putin. Many real journalists have tried, contrary to Carlson’s statement that no one had. It is wrong, however, when you provide a platform solely to reinforce an anti-American dictator’s propaganda. But this is why Putin agreed to allow Carlson to interview him instead of a real journalist.
Meanwhile, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported last week that immigration “is set to add trillions of dollars to the U.S. economy over the next decade” and that “the surge of immigration may have already” provided a benefit “to the economy by helping it avoid a recession” according to Jonathan Nicholson, writing for HuffPost.com.
According to CBO Director Phillip Swagel, “More workers mean more output and that in turn means additional tax revenue. We estimate that from 2023 to 2034, GDP will be greater by about $7 trillion … than “would have been otherwise” without the surge in immigration.
As always, however, on both domestic and international security issues, Republicans are more interested in pleasing Trump than doing what is best for America.
