Fact Check: Image of human hand ‘meat’ on store shelves is AI-generated

An image showing supermarket shelves stocked with packaged meat in the shape of human hands is AI-generated and was intended to demonstrate the capability of AI, the creator of the image told Reuters.
The synthetic image was widely shared on Facebook with the caption, opens new tab, “Human Meat On The Market ! ( SELAH )” and confused its audience online.
The image was originally uploaded on the Facebook page Nik Art, opens new tab on March 19, 2024, captioned, “Human meat shop.” The page bio, opens new tab and its posts indicate that it creates “visual arts.”
The page is managed by digital AI art creator Ladislav Kudela who said via direct message that the picture was created with Midjourney AI.
KudeIa added that the Facebook page is used to display “realistic controversial pictures” to show people what AI is capable of. “Most people on my page know me that all my pics are made with AI.”
