RNC shifts spotlight to crime and immigration as Biden gets back on campaign trail

Republicans gathered for the party’s national convention in Milwaukee will shift their focus to crime and immigration as speeches are underway on Tuesday after opening up the four-day event formally nominating former President Donald Trump as its presidential nominee and the announcement of Ohio Sen. JD Vance as his running mate.

The first day was mostly celebratory of the party’s ticket for president and Trump made an appearance, firing up the crowd by walking into the arena with his fist held up and a bandage over his right ear that was injured in a failed assassination attempt at his rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend.

Tuesday’s lineup of speakers includes several people who have been hurt by crime, fentanyl and chaos at the southern border. Immigration and the border have been signature issues throughout Trump’s time as a presidential figure. The debate over how to handle the country’s immigration policies and the southern border is one Republicans are hoping to capitalize on in November.

Among the speakers scheduled to address the crowd Tuesday night under the theme theme “Make America Safe Once Again” are family members of people who were killed by people that were in the country illegally. Trump and allied Republicans have frequently brought up several of the cases while on the campaign trail and sought to blame Biden’s border policies for the deaths of Americans. One of the speakers is the brother of Rachel Morin, a Maryland woman that prosecutors say was raped and killed by a man who had entered the U.S. illegally after killing a woman in his home country of El Salvador.

Trump has vowed to ramp up the enforcement of immigration policies from his first term, including conducting mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. Most GOP lawmakers are supportive of Trump’s immigration agenda, tanking a bipartisan Senate agreement earlier this year with Trump’s backing and complaints that the bill didn’t go far enough.
