‘Unity in the streets, divisive in the sheets’: Stunned Jon Stewart shreds RNC message

Jon Stewart returned to “The Daily Show” on Tuesday following day two of the Republican National Convention and blasted hypocritical — and “divisive” Republicans who’ve called for “unity” following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

Launching the show, Stewart played a clip of Republicans blasting Democrats for “vitriol” and “hatred” and calling for turning the “temperature down.”

That includes Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who called for turning this moment into a moment that “helps us down the path of healing and unity.”

A stunned Stewart said “wow!” and took a breath, pointedly noting that Johnson is one of the more “divisive” politicians out there today.
“To hear that ‘healing’ rhetoric coming from Ron Johson is impressive,” Stewart deadpanned. “I, for one, look forward to hearing his unifying remarks on the convention floor.”

Predictably, the show then played a clip appearing to show Johnson do the exact opposite at the convention, as he called Democrats a “clear and present danger for America.”

Johnson later said the speech was not the one he intended to give, and blamed the teleprompter for having an old version.
