The Case Against Trump

Category: Perspectives

While I spend a large portion of my time on BNR arguing about Zioinism with anti-Zionists, it is in fact the case that I do not view Trump as being amenable to my views with regards to democracy, social topics, and international diplomacy.

With regard to democracy, Trump’s persistent denial of Biden’s legitimate 2020 win has always been and continues to be incredibly alarming and without precedent. At Trump’s “Save America” rally, he told the crowd to “fight like hell”; and so they did. The trashiest of civilians went on to disrupt hallowed democratic traditions with outrageous violence, and messaging, including one neo nazi in a “Camp Auschwitz” sweatshirt. During the riot, Trump did not tweet calls to end the violence. He instead tweeted, “We love you. You’re very special”. 3+ hours later, he tweeted for the rioters to go home. He resisted calls from his aides, family members and others to make a faster or stronger statement against the violence.

As far as social views, Trump’s alignment with the values of Project 2025 is nearly perfect or absolutely perfect. This is not a man standing up for a woman’s right to choose early in pregnancy. This is not a man standing up for anti-discrimination laws at the federal level for the protection of LGBT persons. This is not a man who values the progress, both cultural and legal, that America has made that has made it a better place to live today than decades ago. Trump is a man who has surrounded himself with those who believe abortion and LGBT rights should be subservient to religion. And that just isn’t the way it should be in America in 2024.

In the international realm, Trump directly threatened to abandon Taiwan to the Chinese, flaunting decades of policy in which America maintains strategic ambiguity with regards to whether it would directly assist Taiwan in case of an invasion. While Trump is very Zionist, he also is notoriously unpredictable, and that isn’t what Israel needs in an ideal American president. Israel needs reliability and dependability. With regards to Ukraine, the famous quid pro quo testimony from Ambassador Sondland immediately comes to mind:

“As I testified previously, with regard to the requested White House call and White House meeting, the answer is yes,” Ambassador Sondland said during his testimony in response to a question about whether there was a quid pro quo.

“Everyone was in the loop,” he said. “It was no secret” adding that he directly communicated the “quid pro quo” to Ukrainian President Zelensky.

The Ukraine incident is damning two-fold: One, it demonstrates Trump’s anti-democratic principles by standing in the way of aid for Ukraine. Two, it demonstrates Trump’s lack of morals by attempting to issue a quid pro quo for political gain.

In summation, Republicans should have gone with Nikki Haley.
