Donald Trump’s sliding performance in the polls has prompted alarm among his closest aides and allies, who feel his chances of winning the presidency are sliding away after the ascent of Kamala Harris to the top of the Democratic ticket.
The former president was once ahead of Joe Biden by several points in national polls, and so dominant in the swing states that there was serious chatter about true blue states like New York flipping red in November. But recent polls have him slipping behind.
A month after Mr Biden dropped out of the race, MAGA (“Make America Great Again”) operatives have turned on each other as they try to rescue his campaign. Donors and party strategists have told The Telegraph the whole campaign needs a reset, and warned that Trump’s messaging is failing to land with key voters.
Some allies, including Vivek Ramaswamy and Kellyanne Conway, have argued that Trump must refrain from personal attacks on Ms Harris, and focus on her policy record as a senator and liberal prosecutor in California.
Others feel that the Trump campaign’s leadership has been taken over by Republicans in name only (“RINO”) strategists who have lost sight of the project he launched eight years ago.
They point to his loss in support among some blue collar workers in Rust Belt states, where Mr Biden had been steadily losing ground prior to last month. Trump’s political coalition of disaffected working class voters and establishment Republicans is coming apart at the seams, some argue.
