Amy Klobuchar would have been the fairer and more strategic choice for Vice President in 2020.
At the time, Klobuchar had a clear advantage in terms of primary support, with more votes and delegates than Kamala Harris (who dropped out before voting). Klobuchar also brought significantly more Senate experience, having served since 2007 compared to Harris’s 2017 start. This experience was crucial, especially given Biden’s legislative agenda and the need for an experienced negotiator in Congress.
Klobuchar’s Midwestern roots and representation of a purple state, Minnesota, would have added a layer of geographic balance to the ticket. By appealing to swing voters in the Midwest, Klobuchar would have provided a stronger connection to the working-class voters that democrats have lost. Her record as a pragmatic, centrist Democrat would have been a direct appeal to independents and moderate Republicans in crucial states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, where elections are ultimately won.
Additionally, Klobuchar has a reputation for getting things done through bipartisan cooperation, a quality that could have complemented Biden’s image as a bridge-builder. Known for her willingness to work across the aisle and focus on issues that resonate broadly—such as healthcare access, job creation, and infrastructure—Klobuchar might have presented a more pragmatic and unifying choice.
While democrats think DEI is the end all be all, prioritizing experience and electability would have better served the democrats long term. Choosing Klobuchar would have highlighted meritocracy over DEI optics, reinforcing Biden’s message of competence and experience. Her selection would have demonstrated that qualifications and track record were the primary considerations, appealing to those who value experience and moderation. In the end, Klobuchar would have been the better and more effective choice, a woman who might have actually won this cycle.
I personally like Pete more than Amy, but in a meritocracy, Amy should have gotten the nod. But it wasn’t a meritocracy. It was a DEI selection.
Would Amy have defeated Trump? We’ll never know for sure, but everything suggests she would have had a better chance, and a well deserved chance at that.
