A new book claims that Kamala Harris and Donald Trump’s concession call after the former Vice President’s humiliating defeat was somewhat awkward.
Harris’s aides had difficulty connecting the call, which might be a microcosm of how the country would have been run had she actually won. However, what Trump said to Harris once he was on the phone left an impression on the staff. A negative impression. And it’s hilarious.
After fumbling the call transfer the day after the election, Harris finally got on the phone and spoke to Trump.
“Harris respectfully addressed the man she’d called a fascist and an existential threat to democracy,” the author writes.
Whipple reveals that the President’s end of the conversation is pretty much classic Trump. Able to separate the brutal grind of a political campaign and turn on the charm. And that’s where it gets genuinely hilarious.
One of Kamala’s aides was absolutely livid that Trump dared to be … polite.
While Harris making the call was humiliating and awkward – she “‘felt the weight of the crushing defeat” – Trump was in good spirits. While Harris was making comments about him needing to be a “President for all Americans,” Trump sounded like Chris Farley in one of his SNL skits for “The Chris Farley Show.”
“You’re a tough cookie. You were really great. And that Doug – what a character! I love that guy,” Trump reportedly said.
So shocked by his comments was one Harris aide that she described the soon-to-be President as a sociopath. His remarks, they contend, were “odd and inappropriate.”
“I was like, what?” she recalled, according to the book. “Honestly, I felt like, what is this? It’s so manipulative. He’s a sociopath.”
Wait. If Trump is a “sociopath” for being nice to Harris after pointing out how incompetent she would be as a President, what does that make Kamala for being cordial in the same phone call after spending weeks referring to him as a fascist with admiration for Adolf Hitler?
Please. Trump has long been viewed as a cutthroat businessman who, when the cameras aren’t rolling, is as nice and charming a guy as you’ll ever meet. It’s who he is.
