It should not shock anyone that many Statehouse Republicans’ gut reactions to pressure from Washington is to immediately cave, even in the face of threats to the state — after all, they’ve drawn themselves into districts where the president looms large in primary elections. However, they show how weak they are by so quickly jumping when the president orders them to.
At a time when more and more working-class Hoosiers are struggling to keep a roof over their heads, feed their families, or pay their utility bills, Indiana Republicans want to take one of the last things Hoosiers have left – their voice. In a pathetic pursuit of making the president happy, they are willing to play fast and loose with democracy and the independence of our state and her people.
Let’s be clear: Indiana Republicans claim they defend freedom and liberty, but every day they show a willingness to make Hoosiers less free. This time they are doing so by allowing themselves to be browbeaten by the president. Statehouse Republicans are all too happy to waste our tax dollars so that they can appease the same men who otherwise don’t come to Indiana until it’s convenient for them.
