Like dictators before him, Trump’s road to tyranny is paved with hate
This week’s shooting of two National Guard members was horrific. But Trump’s response is disproportionate and bigoted. He vows to pause migration from “Third World Countries,” deport legal immigrants from “high-risk” nations, strip citizenship from naturalized Americans, and detain migrants without due process. These unconstitutional threats scapegoat entire groups for one gunman’s crime and inflame nativism. America is not a bloodline but an idea. As Reagan once said, anyone can come here and become an American by embracing our ideals. Trump’s politics depend on hate. America is better than this—and we must reject it.
