Trumpism Is at War with the Idea of a Citizenry of Equals

The regime’s latest racist fury is tied to the Right’s much broader attempt to redefine citizenship and national identity in service of an exclusionary white nationalist vision

As the year ends, Trumpism is making its worldview unmistakably clear. After a deadly attack in Washington, the administration seized on tragedy to escalate a racist, exclusionary project: mass migration bans, denaturalization, attacks on birthright citizenship, and open denunciations of immigrants as “non-compatible with Western Civilization.” From Trump and Stephen Miller to J.D. Vance and GOP leaders, the message is consistent—America belongs to a narrowly defined, ancestral “us.” These are not isolated outbursts but a coherent political vision rooted in white nationalism, rejecting egalitarian pluralism in favor of hierarchy, exclusion, and ethno-nationalist rule.
